[12/03] Tomorrow I'll be going to Bochum because Jan Delay & Disko No.1 are nominated as "best live act 2008". The price is called 1live Krone and we hope to take it home. If this ain't working we are still going to have a good party...
[12/03] On December, 6th I perform at the drumday in Mannheim. I'll share the stage with drummers like Benny Greb, Dom Famularo, Claus Hessler to name a few.

November 2008
[11/05] We are nearly done with the upcoming Jan Delay CD. But I am in the studio one more time this month to overdub some percussion and rototoms (!).
[11/05] At the end of the month I perform and teach at the 20th international drummer meeting in Salzgitter.
[11/05] Probably a year ago I recorded a song for a jazz rock CD that has just been released. An old friend of mine by the name of Franz Holtmann played guitar and Matthias Krauss aka Mat Junior played keyboards. I know both of them for a long time: With Franz I recorded my first CD ever. The name of the band was "Triton". Matthias was one of the founders of "Matalex", a band in which I played from 1994 to 1998. So I was really happy when Franz called to ask me to play on their song.
The CD is a tibute to the Mahavishnu Orchestra and that's why it is called "Mahavishnu - Re-Defined".
Other artists on the compilation are Billy Cobham, Mitchel Forman, Dennis Chambers, Gary Husband and John Patitucci just to name a few.

[10/10] It is definately time for the October news :) I am at this very moment on the train to St. Leon-Rot in the south of Germany to play a drumclinic. I have to admit that I never heard of St. Leon-Rot before this clinic. The last one I played in the south was the Meinl Drum Festival in September which really was a great, great festival which opened up a lot of doors for me.
[10/10] Later this month I am going to do what I love most and that is creating music in the studio. I'll work with a very talented young singer from Berlin by the name of Meike Büttner. My brother is going to be the producer on this date and we are recording in his own studio in Hanover.

[09/05] This september is all Drum Clinics: The first one is the Meinl Drum Festival where I'll be teaching for one day and performing on day two. My flight leaves in two hours so I better get going...
[09/05] And there's two more clinics: The first one is on September 16th in Kevelaer and the other one is in Dresden (Sep, 20th) and it's called "2. Dresdner Drumfestival". So I already spent some extra hours in my rehearsal room :)
[09/05] The new CD "Views" from the band Vibe Tribe just came out. I played one track which was at least two years ago. The other drummers on this CD are Dave Weckl, Terri Lyne Carrington and Will Kennedy. That's not half bad....

[08/04] This year I am not playing as many gigs as in 2007 or 2006 with Jan Delay & Disko No.1 because we are constantly working on our new CD which does take quite some time. So it's really great that we will be playing four festival gigs this month in Germany and Switzerland.
[08/04] In the meantime I teach at the Popkurs in Hamburg.
[08/04] Near the end of the month I am going to record the second half of Jan Delay's new CD.
[08/04] Right after I finished recording I'll go to Hannover the next day to play a drumclinic at the PPC drumnight. That's one thing I really love about this job: One day you record a CD and you're concerned with groove and the next day you are playing a clinic and your main concern are fills.........
No you shouldn't......I mean you shouldn't take me seriously!! Never!
I am happy to play there with Alex Vesper, Chris Coleman and Wolfgang Haffner.

[07/02] In July I am going to play with three different bands. The first gig is with Mousse T. next weekend. It is going to be Sharon Philipps, Andrew Roachford & Emma Lanford on vocals.
[07/02] The second "gig" is without any singers because it is drummers only when I go to France this sunday. I 'll be teaching and playing at the "International summer camp" which is being organised by Philippe Légaré.
[07/02] And I'll play with Jan Delay & Disko No.1 on two festivals in Switzerland & Germany. I can't tell you how much fun this is for me...I just love the music, the vibe and the dedication.
[07/02] The last thing that is scheduled so far for July is a gig with "Schiller" where I am subbing for Ralf Gustke. It is quite some time ago that I played with them and I hope that we play some of the songs that I already know :)

[06/01] It is quite some time ago (i.e. nearly 6 months) that I played live with Jan Delay & Disko No.1 --- but now we're back: In June we'll be playing some of the biggest festivals in Europe (Hurricane & Southside) and we're looking forward to doing that!!

[05/07] Today we started recording Jan Delay's new CD. Actually it was more a soundcheck day...we tried lots of different drums & microphones. From tomorrow on we'll record seven brandnew songs. It's going to be the whole rhythm section (drums, bass, keys and guit.) in one room recording live on tape!! Yes TAPE :)
[05/07] In the second half of may I go back to France to continue touring with french superstar Jenifer.

[04/22] I am a big fan of Bernhard Castiglioni's website drummerworld.com. It is very inspiring to watch videos of drummers I like and it is great to get to know drummers I haven't known before. [04/22] I am gonna play a drum clinic in Nevers / France on April, 27th while I am on tour in France...in fact I am leaving tommorrow, so I better get ready soon :)
[04/09] Still on tour in France....all is going well. I am playing with french superstar Jenifer. Big production, good band playing good music, nice people. We'll be playing three shows in Paris (starting tomorrow) -- after that there is a ten day break before we continue the tour.
[04/09] In this break I go back to Germany to work on Jan Delay's upcoming CD. We make drum recordings in two studios to find the one that suits our needs the best and we'll be also working on new songs. And finally in may we will actually record.

March 2008
[03/01] This march I'll be on tour in France with Jenifer. We already rehearsed for three weeks last month and the band really sounds good. I fly to Lille in a few days to rehearse for another three days and on march, 7th we play our first gig.
[03/01] As some of you might know, the musicfair in Frankfurt is taking place in march also. My favourite cymbal manufacturer Meinl invited me to play there and so I checked my agenda and there it was: a day off on march, 13th. So I decided to take a very early (I mean VERY early) flight from Marseille to Frankfurt and play a few shows for Meinl on that day.

[02/02] There were no news in January because I was on vacation :) which was great!!
But now back to work: I'll fly to Paris in two days to rehearse with Jenifer for three weeks. I am going on tour with her in March / April and May. I'm big fan of long rehearsals.......at least when they are paid well........................just kidding :)
[02/02] After the rehearsals I go straight to Heilbronn / Germany to play a clinic for Beyerdynamic, my favourite microphone company.
[02/02] At the end of the month we are going to continue working on the new Jan Delay & Disko No.1 CD. That's really exciting for me because expectations are high after his last CD was number one.

[12/10] This month I will be touring with Jan Delay & Disko No.1 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It is three months ago that we played our last gig so now everybody in the band is looking forward to going back on the road.
[12/10] I played my last drum clinic for this year on December, 7th in Hammelburg. Benny Greb (who lives in Hamburg as well) and I drove together in Benny's car straight from Hamburg to Bavaria and had a great time.
While I was there Norbert Saemann from Meinl invited me to play at next year's Meinl drumfestival. That's amazing! I am really happy about that.

[11/11] That's just like last year: One year ago I went to Paris to record a CD for Christophe Willem which --by the way :) -- was number 1 in France. Today I am flying to Paris again to rehearse and play with Jenifer. I recorded two CDs with her in the last couple of years but this is gonna be my first live gig with her. Looking forward to that!
[11/11] Apart from that I am still in the drumclinic-business and I am going to play two more clinics this month.

[10/04] After the first part of my first clinic tour ever was very successful I am looking forward to going on Sonor clinic tour again this month. I would have never expected so many people coming to my clinics and I definately do appreciate that!!
[10/04] The main part of my life as a drummer remains playing gigs with other musicians :) This month I will be playing two gigs with Mousse T.. The first one of theses gigs is a very special gig with a symphony orchestra which means that I have to play real SOFT and QUIET!
The second gig is a normal play-as-hard-as-you-possibly-can-gig...................no, just kidding........But it's gonna be a regular gig with Andrew Roachford, Emma Lanford and Sharon Philipps on vocals.

[09/12] This September is my "Clinic September". Normally I don't play too many drum clinics and it's been a while since I played my last one (that was in November 06). So I am really looking forward to playing a clinic tour for Sonor which starts September, 24th in Kiel.
[09/12] As warm-up gigs for the clinic tour I am gonna play two more clinics: in Lübeck and in Oldenburg.
[09/12] But at the end of the day I am really happy that I don't have to play all alone this month. I am going to work with Jan Delay on his new CD and the last gig of this month is gonna be in Hamburg with Nils Gessinger.

[08/17] I will be playing a gig with the band Schiller that I've been touring with in Greece this year. The gig was just confirmed and is going to take place in Berlin at the end of this month.
[08/04] ...so this is already the last month of this year's festival season. That's kind of sad, especially because we didn't really have much of a summer in Germany this year. Too much rain....Anyway I'll be playing a few gigs with Jan Delay & Disko No.1 in Germany, Austria & Switzerland. Our last gig for August will be in my hometown Hamburg / Germany.
[08/04] It was in Hamburg as well where a photo session for the new Meinl Cymbals Catalogue took place. You can find these photos in next year's catalogue.

[07/06] This July I will mostly be playing festival shows with Jan Delay in Germany. One of these gigs is the Live Earth festival in Hamburg. Live Earth is about global warming, there will be several concerts in different cities in the whole world.
[07/06] Before our gig at the Hip Hop Open in Stuttgart we will get together in our rehearsal room to check out new songs for Jan's next CD.
[07/06] Speaking of CDs: Today is the release of Jan Delay & Disko No.1's new single: "Türlich, Türlich", which is a mix of Cameo's "Word up" and a German Hip Hop track by Bo.

Our live CD just came out and entered the charts in a few countries: Jan Delay & Disko No.1 "Mercedes-Dance-Live". If you're interested in how it sounds you can listen to a medley of some of the tracks on myspace.com/jostnickel.
But we're also continuing to play live on some of the biggest live festivals in Europe (check the dates).
Of course club shows are still fun too. So I'll be playing a few gigs with Nils Gessinger and Johannes Oerding in my hometown Hamburg.
Recording is fun, too :) I'll be recording three tracks with a still unknown singer in my new studio. I have been working there before and now I had the possibility to become a partner. That gives me the chance to work easily for different producers who want to work with me but don't own a studio - and don't wanna pay the money to rent one :)
And finally I am still parttime teacher at the Hamburg School of Music and at the Popakademie in Mannheim.

I am going back on the road with Jan Delay & I am looking forward to that. It is just too much fun and good music. We played our last gig in march, so it's about time!
And I am number one in the french charts again. Well, okay, it's only me playing drums on two tracks that I recorded in Paris at the end of last year. The artist's name is Christophe Willem, and the CD is called "Inventaire". Very popular in France but nobody knows the guy in Germany for example since he's singing in french :)
From the month of April I'll be teaching in one of Germany's finest music schools: The Popakademie in Mannheim. Very good facility!

This January is really different than last year. It's packed with gigs, rehearsals and recording sessions. Last year it was more like having lots of time to chill...
I play only one gig with my main band Jan Delay which gives me the chance to go on tour with Lychee Lassi from Berlin.
The rest of the time I will be working with Stanfour on their first release for Universal. We will be recording in Stockholm / Sweden with three different producers. I am looking forward to getting to know their different styles.
